Dr. Mary reveals The 4 Habits to Create Long-Term Weight Loss

  1. You must sleep!   Normal sleep means uninterrupted sleeping for 7 to 8  hours, without the help of medications.    The reason this is so important is because of your hormones; more specifically, your fat-burning hormones.    Growth hormone is produced by your liver, and peaks during deep sleep between 12 midnight and 4AM.  If you are getting up, you are interrupting this very important hormone!  When this happens, you break the fat-burning cycle.  So, if you are having trouble with your sleep - this could be why your weight-loss program isn’t working as well as it should.  Making sure your sleep pattern is good is one of the most important habits to create sustainable weight loss, and maintain it!
  2. Keep the stress under control.  Yes, this needs to be a habit!  If you are stressed, even if you are eating correctly, you will hit a plateau!  Stress can actually cause you to gain weight due to the cortisol release.  If you have a stressful life, it’s important to find ways to manage your stress.  One of my favorite ways to manage stress is to focus on deep breathing, and have a regular practice of meditation and prayer.   When we can stop and just breath, it can change the rest of your day.  Many people don’t breath deeply, and that lack of oxygen will contribute to more stress.  Another method of managing stress is to move your body.  A quick 10 minute walk can change your whole attitude and viewpoint.  The next time you are stressed, simply breath deeply and try to take a walk.
  3. Make high quality food a priority.  This is probably one of the biggest factors!  This is what makes this program self-sustainable.  Really - if you go all organic and clean and homemade, your body will start rejecting food additives and chemicals!  So, when you cheat -  your body rejects the cheat very loudly!  This makes you think twice before indulging in the future, and that’s the magic!!  You no longer WANT the bad stuff that’s making you fat, sick and tired.  The root of the problem when trying to lose weight and eat healthier is the subtle addiction to food additives.  Once those are detoxed, your body only wants good quality, home made food!  THAT results in an overall enhanced health and wellness never expected and can actually make you feel years younger!  WOW!
  4. Here is it, the one caveat to any weight loss program if you expect exceptional results - physical training. And keep in mind, being active doesn’t necessarily count. You can be active doing yard work - and create repetitive strain injury especially if you are out of shape. Exercise is a vital component to any program, and the sooner you find something that you can make a habit and a hobby, the healthier you become. There is so much more technical information with relationship to fat burning hormones, but not enough time to discuss in this training. I do want to tell you what happened to me, and how I came to my own personal realization at the age of 49. Even though I had the “book” knowledge, I did not have my own training program in place. This became a HUGE problem after a car accident left me with chronic migraine headaches for 2 days a week. The doctors told me the MRI showed “instability” in my neck. This resulted in debilitating headaches. Their only solution was medication. This was not an option for me so I self-evaluated and outlined a plan. Since logic dictated the best way to treat instability was to create stability, I realized it was necessary I had to do the work myself. Strengthening seemed logical. The results were astounding. But, it took commitment and determination and time. Ten months after I started working with restorative yoga and pilates reformer training 3 times per week, I was finally seeing the results I knew were possible. The headaches were diminishing dramatically, I was stronger than ever, my posture and flexibility improved dramatically, and I was able to pick up and play with my toddler grandchildren. I always disliked the gym - so working with the yoga/pilates studio was perfect for me and my needs. This is why I always recommend you find what works for you, and make the commitment to that activity that works towards making you stronger and more flexible. Make it a hobby and a habit, and you will reap the rewards!
